Something terrible happened in North America at the end of the last "ice age". Diamonds were formed and shot into the bones of living animals all over the continent. Tremendous plasmas were created that transformed elements into others many of which were radioactive. Iridium was created. Dennis Cox has an insight as he worked as a blast analyst:
